Here’s an important question to answer: what’s the Golden Circle? The Golden Circle is a Russian tourist route, showcasing some of the most spectacular historic sites in all of Russia. The Golden Circle, or the Golden Ring as you might sometimes hear it called, is made up of eight major cities. One of the most famous of these cities on is–you guessed it!–Yaroslavl.

Main Attractions

  • Yaroslavl’s Historic Center: a UNESCO world heritage site
  • The Monastery of Our Savior and Transfiguration
  • The Yaroslavl Art Museum
  • “Music and Time” Museum
  • More Orthodox cathedrals than you can count

Yaroslavl is located in western Russia, northeast of Moscow and southeast of St.Petersburg. It is situated in the eponymous oblast, of which it is the administrative center. The city is situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers.

Yaroslavl's Location

It should only take me about four hours by train to visit Hillary–it might be a little longer to get over to Nate, though!

Fun facts

  • Yaroslavl celebrated it’s 1,000th birthday in 2010.
  • There is a bear portrayed on the city’s coat of arms and flag because, as legend goes, Prince Yaroslav slayed a bear in the land known as “The Bear’s Corner.” The prince proceeded to found a city in this place, and that city became known as Yaroslavl.
  • Yaroslavl is one of the hosts of the 2018 FIFA World Cup!
